The new
regulations come into effect on the 5th March 2025, and
include a range of fines and sanctions that can be imposed by
the Greek Government. The RGA has issued a press release stating
that it is aware that some Operators have already received
"cease and desist" letter from the Greek Gambling Commission.
The RGA already
has existing formal complaints registered with the European
Union (EU) about the Greek law. It is now believed that the RGA
will be working with their legal teams, in both Athens and
Brussels, regarding these recent enforcement regulations. The
RGA believes that these regulations are protectionist in nature
and contrary to EU law and unworkable.
"These measures
have clearly been introduced in haste and we cannot believe that
they have been approved by the European Commission. They are
blatantly protectionist in nature and if EU Internal Market
rules mean anything then the European Commission must take
prompt action to make Greece reconsider. Whether it is raised in
Brussels or Athens, nobody could fail to note coincidence that
these measures have been rushed through with a ridiculously
short deadline, at a time then the Greek Government is actively
looking to sell its shares in OPAP." Said Clive Hawkswood, Chief
Executive of the RGA. |
